The purchase and sale of housing grew by 18.1% in January 2017

The sale of properties soared 18.1% in January compared to the same month of 2016, to 38,457 operations. This is the highest figure in the last four years, according to data published today by the INE, which reveal that this indicator of the real estate market has already been on the rise for 12 consecutive months.

More resales than new build properties.

Of the total of transactions registered in the Property Registry in January, 82.2% corresponded to second-hand homes, with 31,628 operations and a year-on-year increase of 20.7%. According to data from the National Institute of Statistics (INE), the second-hand market recorded the highest number of sales in the last nine years (January 2008) and has already accumulated 35 months in the positive.

Up the purchase of new build property.

Sales of new properties rose 7.2%, to 6,829 operations, 17.8% of the total. Compared to December, the purchase and sale of new and second-hand homes increased 30%.

89.8% of homes registered in January were free, with 34,544 units and a year-on-year growth of 17.9%. For its part, the purchase and sale of public housing increased 19.5% and accumulated 3,913 transactions.

In Cantabria where transactions increased the most, in Andalusia where less.

The highest growth in the sale of homes registered in January was in Cantabria, with a rebound of 45.1%, followed by the Balearic Islands, with 40.5%, and La Rioja, with 40.1%.

Above the national average of 18.1% were also Catalonia (30.6%), Castilla-La Mancha (30.1%), Extremadura (27.9%), Asturias (21.7%) and Madrid (19.8%).

The lowest increases were recorded in Andalusia (7.8%) and Castilla y León (12.7%), and housing sales only fell in the Canaries, where it fell by 0.5% compared to January 2016.
